Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed strong criticism of the decision by the Trump administration to pause new sanctions against Russia. Zelenskyy argues that this move could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin to escalate the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The suspension of sanctions, he believes, acts as a reward for Moscow, potentially undermining international efforts to resolve the war.
The proposed sanctions had aimed to impose additional restrictions on Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation network, including tariffs of up to 100% on major importers of Russian oil such as China and India. However, the Trump administration has opted to delay these measures for 60 days to evaluate their impact on the global economy and American interests. This decision has been welcomed by Russian officials, while raising concerns in Kyiv about the United States’ commitment to maintaining pressure on Moscow.
Zelenskyy’s remarks come amidst intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which have damaged over 15 major electricity generation and transmission facilities. These strikes have heightened fears of power shortages and the ability of Ukrainian cities to sustain essential services during the winter months. The Ukrainian president highlighted the strain on the country’s air defense systems, which face increasing challenges in intercepting the barrage of missiles and drones.
Additionally, Zelenskyy raised issues regarding restrictions on Starlink satellite internet services, which are crucial for Ukrainian forces. He noted that these limitations are disrupting military operations, including drone activities.
The situation underscores rising tensions between Washington and Kyiv over strategies to end the war, including the implementation of sanctions and military support. Zelenskyy maintains that sustained pressure on Russia is essential for achieving a lasting peace. He warns that easing restrictions amidst ongoing attacks could prolong the conflict, urging continued international support to protect Ukraine’s critical infrastructure and civilian populations.
