A drone linked to the ongoing Ukraine conflict has struck an apartment building in Romania, injuring two individuals in what is being reported as the first incident of its kind in the NATO member state. The drone, identified as Russian, breached Romanian airspace amid a large-scale assault on Ukrainian targets near the shared river border, as confirmed by Romania’s defense ministry.
The drone was initially detected by radar systems before it eventually crashed into the roof of a residential building in Galați, a city in Romania. This collision led to a fire, which emergency teams were able to extinguish. Two residents sustained minor injuries and were promptly treated medically. In response to the drone’s entry into national airspace, Romanian authorities deployed F-16 fighter jets.
This incident heightens existing security concerns for NATO countries that neighbor Ukraine and Russia, where aerial activity, including drones and missiles, increasingly edges closer to their borders. Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Romania, along with other bordering nations like Latvia, Estonia, and Poland, has witnessed multiple airspace violations. However, prior incidents were mostly confined to debris or drones landing in non-residential areas.
