A Russian tanker named Universal, tasked with delivering diesel fuel to Cuba, has reportedly altered its course after weeks adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, now heading towards Brazil. The shipment, consisting of approximately 270,000 barrels of diesel, originally set sail from Russia in April with Cuba as its intended destination. Maritime tracking data revealed its prolonged drift in the Sargasso Sea, northeast of the Caribbean, before the vessel veered south.
The tanker, subjected to sanctions by the United States, the European Union, Britain, Switzerland, and Canada, later changed its listed destination to “For order.” This maritime term suggests the tanker is awaiting new directives or a definitive port of call. The vessel embarked on its journey from the Russian port of Vistino in early April, accompanied by Russian naval ships during certain segments before entering the vast expanse of the Atlantic.
Cuba has been grappling with acute fuel shortages and recurrent electricity blackouts, exacerbating the island’s energy crisis amid mounting pressure on fuel imports. This year, only one Russian tanker reportedly succeeded in delivering oil to Cuba after obtaining necessary clearance. However, the fuel reserves from that shipment were quickly depleted, intensifying the nation’s ongoing energy woes.
Meanwhile, the United States has been escalating its economic sanctions on Cuba, urging the island nation to implement political and economic reforms. Relations between Washington and Havana have further strained in light of recent US legal proceedings against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro. These actions pertain to the 1996 incident involving the downing of aircraft belonging to the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue.
Amid these rising tensions, the United States has also positioned its military presence in the region, deploying the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and its accompanying strike group in recent weeks. This move signals a heightened US focus on the Caribbean area, reflecting the broader geopolitical dynamics at play.
