Mark Rydell, the accomplished filmmaker who received an Oscar nomination for directing the acclaimed movie On Golden Pond, has passed away at 97. He died of natural causes at a retirement community dedicated to entertainment professionals located in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles.
Rydell rose to prominence with the 1981 film On Golden Pond, which featured the iconic talents of Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The film was a critical success, garnering 10 Academy Award nominations. Both Henry Fonda and Hepburn took home Oscars for their performances, though Rydell himself was bested in the Best Director category by Warren Beatty, who won for Reds. The film was not only a critical darling but also a commercial hit, raking in over $119 million globally. It marked a poignant milestone as Henry Fonda’s final acting role, for which he received his only Oscar.
Throughout an illustrious career, Rydell collaborated with many of Hollywood’s brightest stars. His directorial portfolio includes working with luminaries such as Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Bette Midler, James Caan, Robert Redford, and Mel Gibson.
