Vietnam has underscored its pivotal role in enhancing collaboration between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia, following the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit that celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. According to Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung, Vietnam played a crucial part in the summit’s success, advocating for ASEAN’s central position while also supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening the bloc’s strategic partnership with Russia.
At the forefront of these efforts was Vietnam’s delegation, led by Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, which stressed the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful dispute resolution, all while adhering to international law. The Vietnamese representatives put forward proposals to broaden cooperation in vital sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation, signaling Vietnam’s commitment to these areas.
During the summit, new frameworks were adopted to bolster ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy highlighted as a key area of focus. Demonstrating its dedication to future regional collaboration, Vietnam announced it would host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This move reflects Vietnam’s ongoing efforts to nurture future diplomatic relations and partnerships within the region.
Additionally, on the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to enhancing the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, concentrating on expanding cooperation in fields such as energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam expressed optimism that the summit’s outcomes would contribute to strengthening ASEAN–Russia relations, enhancing regional stability, and opening new avenues for economic growth and cooperation across the Eurasian landscape. The collaborative spirit and strategic initiatives developed during the summit are expected to play a significant role in shaping future interactions between ASEAN and Russia.
