As global markets grapple with fluctuating oil prices and renewed tensions in the Middle East, South Korean stocks made significant strides on Monday, driven by robust performances in the semiconductor sector. Investor optimism was notably buoyed by strong interest in artificial intelligence and semiconductor shares, offsetting broader market concerns.
The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) surged by 113.49 points, marking a 1.65% rise to close at 7,007.72. This marked the third consecutive session of gains for the index. The upbeat sentiment was largely fueled by substantial gains in key technology stocks. Samsung Electronics, a heavyweight in the index, saw its shares jump by 4.98% to 274,000 won. Meanwhile, SK hynix, another major player in the semiconductor industry, experienced a modest rise of 0.59%, closing at 1.87 million won. SK Square, the parent company of SK hynix, also witnessed an increase, advancing 4.45%.
However, the broader market presented a mixed picture. While technology stocks pulled the index upward, other sectors faced challenges. Hyundai Motor saw its shares decline by 1.64%, and LG Energy Solution experienced a more pronounced drop of 3.3%, reflecting a divergence in investor confidence across different industries.
On the currency front, the South Korean won demonstrated strength against the US dollar, closing at 1,381 won per dollar, marking an increase of 4.5 won from the previous session. This currency movement reflects a resilient outlook for South Korea in the face of global economic uncertainties.
