Peter Cullen, a celebrated Canadian actor renowned for lending his voice to iconic characters such as Optimus Prime from Transformers and Eeyore from the Winnie the Pooh series, has passed away at the age of 85. According to a statement from his family, Cullen died on Wednesday at his residence in Los Angeles, surrounded by his loved ones.
Originating from Montreal, Cullen embarked on his career in Canadian television and radio, eventually becoming one of the most distinguished voice actors in the entertainment world. His portrayal of Optimus Prime began with the Transformers animated series in 1984, a role he reprised in seven major films from 2007 to 2023, alongside various spin-off projects. Cullen’s voice work extended to embodying Eeyore, the endearingly gloomy donkey in Winnie the Pooh, featuring in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and multiple related shows, films, and video games.
Beyond these prominent roles, Cullen’s voice acting credits included KARR, the sinister counterpart to KITT in the series Knight Rider, and he provided the unique clicking sounds for the extraterrestrial creature in the 1987 film Predator. Additionally, he gave voice to King Kong in the 1976 remake of the classic film.
Cullen often credited his elder brother, Larry, a former captain in the US Marine Corps, with influencing the characterization of Optimus Prime. Larry’s guidance helped Cullen shape the character as an authentic hero, one who embodied strength without aggression. This portrayal not only endeared Cullen to fans but also earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011. His contributions to the industry were further recognized with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
Spanning several decades, Cullen’s career in voice acting left a lasting impact on popular culture, as his performances became synonymous with some of the most memorable characters in animation and science fiction. His work continues to resonate with audiences, ensuring his legacy endures in the hearts of fans worldwide.
