South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has called for an in-depth investigation into a recent mine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that resulted in injuries to three South Korean soldiers. The explosion, which occurred on September 21, happened as soldiers were clearing a path in the western sector of the DMZ in preparation for a joint inspection.
During a Cabinet meeting, President Lee emphasized the need for a swift and transparent investigation, urging cooperation with the United Nations Command to establish the facts. Preliminary findings from South Korea’s military suggest that North Korean land mines are likely responsible for the incident. A joint investigation involving South Korean and UN Command personnel is currently underway to verify these claims.
President Lee expressed his concern for the affected soldiers and their families, urging caution against the spread of unverified information while the investigation is ongoing. He also highlighted the necessity of bolstering South Korea’s defense capabilities, including the development of advanced military technologies.
The investigation aims to determine the origin of the mines and clarify the circumstances surrounding the explosion. Should the final findings confirm North Korean responsibility, South Korean authorities have indicated that appropriate measures will be considered.
