India is advancing its plans to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia, as Moscow has now submitted a cost proposal to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The final decision regarding this acquisition awaits the Cabinet Committee on Security’s approval, following successful price negotiations and clearance from the Finance Ministry. The initial contract for five S-400 systems, signed in 2018 for $5.43 billion, is nearing completion, with the last system expected to be delivered by November 2026.
The acquisition of these additional systems is anticipated to bolster India’s air defense infrastructure, particularly along the eastern sector bordering China. The S-400’s performance during Operation Sindoor in May 2025 has been notably positive, playing a crucial role in India’s air defense operations. This successful deployment has further reinforced the argument for expanding the country’s S-400 fleet.
While India is moving forward with the S-400 purchase, it remains undecided on acquiring Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. Despite the Indian Air Force expressing interest in the proposal, particularly in light of China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, no final decision has been made on this front.
The proposed acquisition of the S-400 systems is expected to be a key topic in broader India-Russia defense discussions. These talks are set to coincide with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India for the BRICS summit in September, where defense cooperation between the two countries will likely be a significant point of discussion.
